Plan A. and Plan B.

So,

Some of you may have heard the "joke" (I say this tongue in cheek ;) that God's plan is Plan A. and ours is Plan B. Plan B. was to go to Zambia and over a year's time or so do research and work out how to begin practicing some midwifery and then to train midwives so as to multiply myself as a Christian and a midwife... I still believe that is Plan A., just maybe a bit further out than I first thought.

Let me tell you about the current Plan A. Susie, the nurse here with Action Zambia who lives at the Farm with me, and I will be teaching health curriculum for about four months beginning in January (first I'll finish my Orientation the end of this month, take and pass (God-willing) the midwifery exam and for Susie- the nursing exam, tweak the curriculum and have it translated into Nyanja, choose churches to work with, and have Christmas break). I'm really excited to use this curriculum called CHE- Community Health Evangelism curriculum. It uses basic health teaching (which has not been taught to Zambians from a young age) and sews gospel teaching into it about who God is and how much we need Him in our lives. We'll be teaching things like germ theory, why brushing our teeth is important and how best to do that, why we need to boil water for a full 20 minutes, nutrition in pregnancy, breastfeeding, basics on HIV/AIDS, etc. We have enough curriculum to keep us busy for years, but we'll be choosing some pertinent lessons and hope to find some bright students from each church that would like to volunteer alongside us.

Around May we will (assuming that we are both certified at this point) hope to begin a mobile clinic that can utilize our skills as medical professionals and allow us to use the individuals we have taught to help us with health teachings, evangelism, and basic health care. Then we'll see what happens. Perhaps a more midwife-care ministry will blossom out of this for me. You just never know.

Please pray for both Susie and I. Currently I am having some difficulty convincing the General Nursing Council to register me and allow me to take the exam November 30th for some tedious reasons. Assuming that this gets done Susie and I will be taking our four hour exams (start praying on the 29th because our time is ahead of yours!). We are a little wary as she got a 92% last time and was not passed... Please pray for God's mercy on us and that He would work out all the kinks ahead of us.

Sorry to be late with my quarterly hard copy letter (December, folks), but these last three weeks have been just crazy! The director and his wife spent two weeks in Egypt for their 25th anniversary and Susie and I managed the Farm and two five-year-olds! I... think I'm not quite ready to have kids- at least not two at a time and five years of age! Gift and Grace are great kids- I do love them- but really got a taste of motherhood and how it is a priority ministry and if nothing gets done but that it is alright.

Also for these last three weeks Susie and I have been trying to register for our exams, the cars have had to be jumped or push started most every morning, we had a shipment of 18 medical boxes that were delayed by a week and a half then required us to go to the airport for several hours (with the kids) three days in a row an hours drive each way to push them through customs, then we unpacked and assimilated the supplies into our med room and prepared for a short term medical team to come! Glad to have those behind us, but that really only leaves a week and a half for studying and continuing to try and get into this exam! :) God knows- I just have to keep remembering that He has full control.

That's life from this end for now. I hope that you are preparing to have a lovely Thanksgiving with your family and friends. We will be having three turkeys, a full spread, and about 35 people! It's gonna be fun and I thank God for this opportunity to be here in Zambia to prepare for the work that He has for me to do. I pray that you see how God is and has prepared you for the work that He desires to do through you.

Hi Stepahnie,
By reading your blog I just found out that you know dena & james. We go to the same bible study at the York's home with them. I love your blog, it is a great way to communicate. I hope the turkey was good with your "extended" family. Hope the exams go well. I will be praying for you! May God keep you in His care... :-) Cheryl
